The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the principal agency that protects and safeguards the health of all Americans. Their general mandate is to provide essential health and human services, with special emphasis to the less fortunate members of society that cannot help themselves. The department includes more than 300 programs, covering medical and social science research, food and drug safety, Medicare and Medicaid, among others.
